The prevalence of anesthesia providers in public hospitals at Sanaa city
Background: An anesthesia provider: is actually a perioperative physician, where “peri” means all-around. So, responsible for patient care throughout the surgical experience: before, during, and after the surgery itself, Also has many responsibilities outside of the surgical suite, this study aimed to estimate prevalence of anesthesia providers at public hospitals in Sana'a city.
Introduction: Yemen like other countries world widely face a shortage of anesthesia providers. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anesthesia providers at Sanaa city.
Method: In Descriptive Cross-sectional Study from January to August 2020, at nine public hospitals in Sana'a city Yemen, 207 anesthesia providers were enrolled. data collected was organized in data schedule and analyzed by SPSS version 20.0.
Results :Among the 207 anesthesia providers that participate, the mean age was 35.69 ± 9.36 years old, 79.23% were married , 86,5% were male, 60.9% , A mean years of anesthesia practice were 10.72 years, 67.6% were working under supervision and 22% were either working alone or with assistant, 26.6% were working exclusively in O.T , while remainder were distributed among other different departments, number of anesthesia providers annual income (<100,000 YER / m) were 168.8%.
Conclusion: The study used the original primary data obtained of a total of 207 anesthesia providers (with response rate 100%), They were widely distributed at nine different public hospitals Younger age group was more prevalent than other age groups, And male gender was predominant at each hospital and each department.The majority were working under supervision by anesthesiologist or , and about one-quarter were either working alone or with assistant, in other hand there were shortage of anesthesiologist .In relation to their type of work in anesthesia, A slightly more than half of anesthesia provider were doing all type of anesthesia and more than one third were doing both general and spinal anesthesia Average annual workload of anesthesia were ranging from 1488.8 - 1700.6 H, Whereas average annual income and experience were relatively lowered as more than half of anesthesia providers earning less than 100,000 YER monthly and the same proportion have less than ten years of experience in anesthesia practice.
