Background: while central line insertion remains a necessity for critical patient management, the extent of undergraduate anesthesia student`s involvement in this procedure remains under documented.
Objective: to quantify the prevalence of supervised central venous catheterization performed by anesthesia students, and evaluate their satisfaction.
Methods: a cross sectional study, multicenter, forty students under training performed central line catheterization individually or with assistant expressed their self-report satisfaction following the procedure and were aware of the indication and complication.
Results: central line catheterization was performed for 417 patients, 61.3% were male, 38.6% were female, with ASA classification III, II (50%,33%) respectively, where 76% of them were in the ICU, and 17% were under general anesthesia for different operation. CLC in 77% was performed in subclavian site, 15% in right internal jugular vein, and fewer in left jugular vein, right femoral vein and left femoral vein respectively. ( 3%-2%). Most of the central catheterization performed were without complication 74%, while 14% had hematoma, 11% arterial puncture and 1% pneumothorax. The trainee students report high satisfaction 58%, whether 22% were satisfied, 13% not satisfied and only 7% were disappointed of their performance. Central line catheterization was performed without failure in 68% of the procedures, while in the remaining procedures the guide wire failure in 16%, vein prick failure in 14% and miscellaneous in 2% was the reason of central line failure catheterization.
Conclusion: the performance of anesthesia students is average, therefore more training and qualification for anesthesia students should be conducted under supervision at anesthesia operations so that they do not fall into error or failure again and therefore the level of satisfaction with the disease is very high.
